It’s one thing to try the newest and trendiest restaurants in the city, but it’s quite another sort of pleasure to go to one’s favorite restaurant every once in a while. Hünkar is one of those places for us, our favorite upscale tradesmen’s restaurant that has been proving itself over and over again since 1950 (not that we were around back then, but it sure has delivered the same quality in the past decade at its Nişantaşı branch).
Its clientele is a true reflection of its location on the chic Mim Kemal Öke Caddesi, while the service is always top-notch and the setting is simple but elegant with white table cloths on each table. The food is superb, with a salad and meze section where mercimek köftesi, pazı kökü and közlenmiş patlıcan salatası are on offer among other small delicious plates. Their saray köfte and Hünkar beğendi are hands down the best of their meat dishes.
Whether you go for lunch or dinner, make sure you order a serving of su böreği, which will put all other su böreği you’ve ever had to shame. Seriously. The trickiest part is choosing dessert, so it’s smart to go with a few people so you have an excuse to try more than one. Their irmik helvası is quite special so be sure not to miss out on it.
