Long before the days of iPhone cameras and selfie sticks, people used to take photos with analog cameras (remember?). Their talent didn’t lie in how well they could Photoshop but in how well they captured an image in 36 shots of a single film.
Partly nostalgic and mostly artistic, the “Magnum – Contact Sheets” photography exhibition at Istanbul Modern showcases iconic images by influential Magnum photographers. Viewers not only get to see the full 36 shots but also the final chosen shot that made it to the public eye.
Martin Luther King by Leonard Freed, Che Guevara by Rene Burri, Margaret Thatcher by Peter Marlow, The Beatles by David Hurn, Dali by Philippe Halsman… These are some of the names you will come across at the exhibition. Make sure to read the stories that come with the images, they bring a whole different perspective to what you see.
